Russian state repository to concentrate on buying gold
BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Nov 22, 2000
Text of report in English by Russian news agency Interfax
Moscow, 22nd November: Russia's state repository has decided not to buy diamonds in 2000-2001, but to concentrate on buying gold and compete with commercial banks, deputy head of Gokhran, Vladimir Rybkin, told Interfax.

Gokhran currently buys "very small volumes" of platinum group metals, he added.

Gokhran does not plan to export palladium in 2001. Apart from Gokhran, the Central Bank of Russia and Norilsk Nickel export Russian palladium.

Commercial banks signed agreements to acquire around 100 tonnes of gold in 200, while Gokhran has bought around 25 tonnes of gold since the beginning of the year.
