Somehow related to that, perhaps Thanksgiving should become a Day of Atonement for Genocide of Native Americans. Or, the enslavement of millions of West Africans, stealing men and women from their families, letting 50% die in transit, for the sake of profits. Those are hard historic realities of our history, ourselves.

I agree completely. I think anyone involved in these heinous acts should indeed spend Thanksgiving as a day of atonement. That is what you had in mind isn't it? I mean you didn't want everyone to do it did you, just those that committed the crime, that would be fair. Surely you weren't suggesting that people born centuries later, several generations removed from the event should be forced to somehow feel guilty for the crime. Would all non-Native Americans and African American people need to feel remorse on this day of atonement or just those that are direct descendents of people that were here at that time? If you live in the south but have descendents from the north, would you only need to feel somewhat remorseful, or would you double up on Native American tribal destruction remorse, and feel no African American enslavement remorse? What if you are a cild of an inter-racial marriage, where one parent is of the remorse feeling race and one of the remorse receiving race? Should you feel nothing on this day, or perhaps a mix of emotions?
You say you don't want to cause or benefit from cruelty to another living thing, but aren't you guilty of that when you ask people to try to atone for something they didn't do? You're wanting to fill people with a sense of guilt when none should be there. This kind of thing is divisive to our country, not a positive in any way. People should be educated to the truth but not forced to feel guilt over something that they had no part in and that cannot or will not be undone.
Let's just stick to giving Thanks on this day and leave the what fors to the individual. I myself am thankful to have my mansion, nuclear plant, and billion dollar bill, not to mention my vest

Some men hunt for sport , others hunt for food
The only thing I'm hunting for is an outfit that looks good
See my vest, see my vest
Made from real gorilla chest
Feel this sweather there's no better
than authentic Irish setter
see this hat, 'twas my cat
My evening wear, vampire bat.
These white slippers are albino
African endangered rhino
Grizzly bear underwear
Turtles' necks, I got my share
Beret poodle on my noodle it shall rest
Try my red robin suit,
it comes one breast or two,
see my vest, see my vest, see my vest
Like my loafers, former gophers
it was that or skin my chauffeurs
but a grayhound for tuxedo would be best.
So let's prepare these dogs
Kill two for matching clogs
See my vest, see my vest
Oh, wont you please see my vest

United Bears, any thoughts on the mighty 9% European New Market turnaround?
Only up from here? Any suggestions for the shortened thanksgiving trading day?

We become so self-congratulatory - it's damned obtuse. I really don't like to live in bubble of falseness and myth...I like truth.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, you yourself do not have a monopoly on the truth. "Roots", for all its dramatic storytelling power, was not a documentary. Slaves in general were bought, not kidnapped off the shore. Not to mention the dubious notion that allowing half of one's cargo to die somehow enhances profitability. I'm not saying the real truth isn't unpleasant enough, but there is a popular modern tendency to accept anything unpleasant that is said about times long past.

All that said, on this Thanksgiving, I am thankful that we, as a people, have such a relatively light load of problems of our own that we have the luxury of worrying about the living conditions of our food animals, or the sins of our ancestors.

God bless you all.

Nice to know that native americans were so peace loving that would never try to wipe each other out.

Kinda makes one wonder how they all decided which nation was permitted to lay claim to certain geographical regions.

indianwars.org

Maybe they all just got high smoking wacky tobaccy and peyote and were too stoned to fight and kill one another.

People still don't know what happened to the Anazazi indians...

Y'know.. the ones who lived in those cliff dwellings? Anthropoligists believe they were forced to live in those dwellings as a means of defense from their "peaceful neighbors".

Anyway... they just apparently disappeared off the face of the earth... Some dare say it might have been "GENOCIDE" perpetrated by another tribe.

And then we can look to the Aztecs and Incans who have NEVER apologized for conquering and enslaving their neighboring tribes. Nor did the Apaches, the Blackfoot, or many other "peace loving" tribes.

You want the truth Peter? You can't handle the truth.

Because the truth tells us that ALL PEOPLE ARE CRUEL and guilty and they will do whatever they can get away with.

Just like Al Gore and his trying to change Florida election laws after the fact..

It is only a mutually beneficial rule of law that is adhered to by all parties that prevents outbreaks of massive genocide. And when that law no longer protects or represents a portion of those parties, violence breaks out and the power center shifts.

There's your truth Peter... Power. Might makes right... Beateth thy neighbor before he can beateth you.

Unless it is opposed and counter-balanced by equally assertive power groups formed into alliances and various treaties.

Btw, if you think Turkey's are unsanitary, then try to think about what crabs and lobsters truly are and the food they eat...

They haven't knicknamed Crabs "sea spiders" for nothing....

And the next time you worry about an animal eating crap, think of where your dogs or cat has been licking itself.

Spock out....
