That money may be stationary in the sense that it's not going to end up in a cash register at the Gap, but that doesn't mean it stays in equities. Most people I know are quite active with their 401k stash and will/do move into money market funds when the going gets rough. I have several acquaintances who's entire retirement account holdings are currently *out* of equities.

This is, obviously, anecdotal evidence at best, but you raise a good point and it would be interesting to see some numbers on this.
