Karen, they didn't come right and blatantly say they were targeting military votes. That would have been stupid!!

But the effect is the same, nonetheless. And Newt was accurately pointing out that this was not targeted at liberal Jewish voters from Israel, since it would be quite apparent that they would have the proper postmarks.

Military folks are clearly different in that their mail is picked up by the military postal "service" (to use the term loosely.. :0) when it is convenient, transported to the nearest civilian APO outlet and postmarked at THAT LOCATION.

To even believe that they should be disqualified on the basis of postmark, as the memo stated, is clearly an attempt at exploiting an obstacle that is not under the servicemember's control.

And yes, I read that article. It was discussed a week ago in either the Post or WSJ. I was having lunch at the Palm restaurant here in DC when it was pointed out to me.

Regards,

Ron

Have you seen the Belaga piece that Noonan references? I can't find it.

Been searching MSNBC for the past 15 minutes, but they are so screwed up with their search engine that only the most recent articles of his show up (he does equal time with Ollie North)

But FreeRepublic has a mention of it via National Review (obviously a conservative magazine) who are not known for fabrication.

freerepublic.com

There is also some discussion here about Begala's comments. He may have made them verbally as it appears he was on the Brian Williams show when the outcry commenced:

freerepublic.com

Scroll down and you'll see where "NativeTxn" wrote this:

"Begala wrote an insane piece for the MSNBC website earlier this week that equated Bush voters with killers, bigots, and crazies.

MSNBC's most prominent sponsors have, due to the diligence of some on this forum, gotten pointed emails protesting this kind of rhetoric. One or two of the sponsors have replied that they don't like this kind of talk.

Money talks, and MSNBC, no doubt, has gotten the message.

Since sh*t rolls downhill, MSNBC's paid stooge is starting to smell."

So it could be possible that MSNBC pulled that article out of embarrassment. But the evidence is clear that he either wrote or spoke it.

And Begala would be screaming "foul!!!" were he being misquoted.

The article will eventually show up, or be buried.
