Shipments of Intel-type servers rose by one percent in the third quarter, while shipments of Risc/Unix servers soared by 43 percent. The percentage year-on-year rise had also been 43 percent in the second quarter, Gartner Dataquest said.

I would still question whether this statement was taken out of context. The author is comparing Intel based servers with Risc/Unix servers. Well, Intel based servers run Unix, Linux and some even run Solaris. I wonder if he meant to say NT servers vs. Risc/Unix. Also, Compaq, the leader by a lot in Intel based, increased revenues for those by 41% over Q3 of a year ago. Either Europe goes way against the trend (doubt it because Compaq is very strong in Europe) or the writer blew it. Also:

``Front-end Web and back-end engines are creating a strong demand for powerful reliable Unix systems,'' Benson said. "

Front-end web servers are overwhelmingly Intel based. I think the author is screwed (not to say, however, that Sun didn't make that big sales increase).
