Barb--The current system actually favors the large states.
By taking the states you mentioned with Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina and either Virginia or Georgia you take the election. It matters not a bit what the other states vote.
Not long ago when the population distribution was even more skewed (toward the Northeast) only six were needed. The resistance to change came from those large states and their dominance in the House of Representatives. The shift toward the sun belt has shifted the population demographics but it is still the large states with the most to lose.
