Actually, though, the electoral college is an improvement over a straight nationwide popular vote from the small states' point of view. Alaska, with 550 thousand people as of 1990, gets 3 votes, 1 per 183K, while California, at just under 30 million at that time, has 54, or 1 per 555K. 3 votes may not be much, but it's three times the representation Alaska would get in a popular vote.
