One thing is perfectly clear - to BASH Intel's P4 on the basis of older, legacy software has proven to be a dumb thing to do.

Optimized code for the Pentium 4 has so far demonstrated significant improvements for that processor.

The recompilation of business applications would indeed be very illuminating.

Further, the OPTIMIZATION of business applications for the Pentium 4 may be EVEN MORE ILLUMINATING.

Despite these issues, my assessment is that the Pentium 4 is a solid enough performer - with excellent "upside potential" - that Intel will have little trouble in making it a huge commercial success.
