Les, With supplements, you have to assume they are: 1. A scam. 2. Dangerous. Until proven otherwise. Some are natural, but it isn't natural to overbalance something that comes perfectly balanced in nature. So, I take vitamins and sometimes a protein bar, mainly for the sweet flavor without the sugar, not the protein, and that's about it.

Online mag, Testosterone, has run a two week series on the supplement jungle. They are friendlier than I am, as they sell supplements (some very questionable supplements, too, IMHO) and I don't, but still pretty tough on a lot of the claims. Recommended reading.

My chondroitin/glucosamine supplements (made by Schiff) do not contain any salicylates.

Totally anecdotal, but glucosamine/chondroitin seems to have helped me in the past, although I'm not taking it at the moment. I was getting minor, miscellaneous joint pains in the knees from 4-6 days a week of intense step aerobics. It took several weeks, but after taking it daily, I found that I wasn't waking up with the minor pains. I stopped taking the supplement because, after forgetting to take them along with me on a week's vacation, I found the pains didn't reappear (and haven't for the last six months).

I do have a friend with serious repetitive stress injury in her hands(an editor who could no longer keyboard for her work) has found glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM supplements to be a tremendous help. Her doctor, who is a RSI specialist, is the one who recommended the supplements to her.

Note that the supplements seem to work only for joints, not for muscular problems.
