I didn't vote for Carter, and think he was an amazingly
weak President, but you might be surprized to learn that
his 1980 budget was virtually identical to Reagan's. A
close friend of mine made it the subject of a
thesis.

We look back at Presidents Reagan and Carter as being
political extremes. In reality there were only subtle
differences (aside from the 'vision' thing and basic
leadership issues).

We look at Bush and Gore and have to go WAY out of our way
to find differences. There have never been two more
homogeneous candidates in American history. For me, issue
wise, it came down to the environment (I perceived Gore
better) and education (I've come to believe in a stronger
role at the Federal level). That's really not much. Other
than that, the two (issue wise) are pretty much the same
flavor of vanilla.
