MUNICH, Germany — As Taiwan's major foundries begin a huge push to bring up 300-mm wafer fabs in Asia, semiconductor executives this week indicated a growing wariness of depending too heavily on foundries for volume products.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. announced at Munich's Electronica 2000 that it had begun making devices for two customers on a 300-mm pilot line in Tainan, in southern Taiwan. TSMC is building two 300-mm fabs now, and its board of directors recently approved construction of a third 300-mm facility.
