Portfolio Survey -- 11/27/00

NTAP - 10%
AVNX - 10%
GLW - 14%
EMC - 6%
Cash - 60%

Cash includes 401K money, which is 100% in the most aggressive growth fund available under my employer's plan (Fidelity Growth Company (FDGRX). Crappy plan, not enough choices, but it forces me to save and dollar cost average. Also, I sold JDSU in late October at a loss, and will probably buy back after 31 days expire. Bought GLW for the time being with the proceeds, hasn't turned out so well so far. I love JDSU, and have made a lot of money trading it in the last 2 years, more than if I had just been LTB&H. Wish I could say the same for all my stocks.

Biggest mistake of 1999-2000: Chasing a story stock no-earnings shiny pebble (ASTN) from $3 to $18 to $6 to $12 to $1 3/8.

Thanks to Apollo, UF, Mike Buckley et al for making this the best thread on the Web.

AMCC - 4%
ORCL - 3%
ELON - 2%
NT - 2%
Others ~1% - TXN, ITWO, GMST, GLST, SSTI
Margin 21%

Biggest mistake - buying more NTAP and WIND at their 'breakout" in late September. The margin has been a worry as well, causing me to exit positions in CSCO and ORCL that I might have held. I plan to exit margin in January.

Thanks to you all for such a helpful and informative thread. I have done a better job during this downturn of holding on to the great companies I hold rather than selling in a panic.

Biggest Mistake:
Putting most of my money into QCOM in 1999.
I have a taxable account and I want to invest
for the long term and that has made me stay
away from selling. Not sure what to do at
this point. I already have plenty of taxes
to pay for the portion of QCOM and all of my
CSCO stock that I sold this year.

I am thankful for all the gains in 1999 but
it was very hard seeing my dreams fade away
in 2000. But I am keeping my hopes alive.

I keep singing the Sinatra song:

Port. Summary

QCOM 78%
GMST 10%
GX 2% (don't know why its here)
Cash 10%

Single biggest mistake would have to be not selling some QCOM to buy other gorillas when the portfolio was so skewed with QCOM >99%. In retrospect, difficult to know a top as UF has stated. But when everybody is buying, its very difficult to sell on the perception of potential lost gains. Still not very diversified as everything is so expensive in all metrics that we value a company.

I would like to say something about margin which I continue to use in varying degrees, namely covered calls and short puts. I did manage to increase my returns slightly by selling covered calls on QCOM as the momentum went away and with a more rationale mind I thought $200 per share was a reasonable price that I would sell some stock in the future. Its a margin type of transaction but not using margin per se. Also I continue to look for entry points in other gorillas that have been hit to short puts. Some income if the stocks runs, but if it doesn't I get assigned some stock that I wanted to own at that price. Its a bit of a hedge, that seems reasonable today, then again it seemed reasonable in March as well and got burned with it on JDSU as the valuation component/momentum buying and selling skewed how the company should be valued. So in the end is margin good or bad? I guess it really depends on how its used and where you get in or out at.

What do I own?

CSCO 8.4%
EMC 4.6%
JDSU 5.0%
NTAP 4.8%
QCOM 6.5%
SEBL 6.7%
CASH 66.3%

My biggest mistake of 2000:

For a good part of 1999 I was only in QCOM and JDSU. I probably should have diversified early in the year but held on for large losses. My portfolio is in an IRA so taxes not a factor. I think I will stay more diversified in the future and perhaps get out of a position after a 25% loss although I know this is not a G & K principle.
I continue to enjoy, profit from and receive support from all the great posts by the regulars.

Thanks to everyone,

Biggest Mistake

Using Margin to try to take advantage of "bargain basement" prices during the Spring of 2000. I thought I was at a safe and reasonable margin level at about 10% margin. I have sold some laggards and some QCOM in order to stay alive. The QCOM was sold near and at the lows. Hopefully my learnability index has increased.

Thanks to all thread participants.

Although timing a gorilla is an exercise in futility,my biggest mistake was not taking some profits when qcom soared $156 in a single day.On the other side I was elated when with
significant new money I purchased more Q this year at what I percieved to be the rock bottom price of $98/share.I've held on through this wild ride thanks to the sages on this thread who gave me confidence to stay the course. Many thanks to all

Biggest mistake was not selling at least some SNDK when it was a 15 bagger, thinking that from the high point it was going to have a QCOM-like 1999 performance. Greed and fear is what it's all about.

Either geocities.com or CTXS, though the former has held it's value more than my stocks this year. Lesson re: CTXS is obvious when considered in G&K terms (it's neither...and what's with the business man sitting on the jet engine, anyway?) Shoulda definitely listened to Guster on that one. Selling at 52 week low wasn't too bright but hey, who the heck can time these things?

Smartest investment this year: Two trips to Seattle with family, and a trip to St. Thomas with family and close friend.
