Hi KLP,

I'm not too concerned about the followers of Jesse Jackson if things don't go their way. But I am a bit concerned about the followers of Charleton Heston who might decide to take matters into their own sights.

As far as silent majorities are concerned, it's good to do a reality check every once in a while. 18% of Americans voted for Gov. Bush. 18% voted for Algore. A majority is 50% plus one. You do the math.

Best, Ray :)

As a lawyer I have to say that I don't know what real good the US Supreme Court can do now, except make a legal point. Gore always had the option of getting a manual recount after the certification - in theory, at least, it was one of the remedies available to him in the contest phase. In fact, I suspect that he shot himself in the foot by demanding the recount before the certification during the protest phase.

The spin I am hearing now is that he wanted an extension of time, he got an extension of time, and he still did not win.

But of course he is asking for, and could get, another manual recount in Palm Beach, and a complete manual recount in Miami-Dade, and that would not be changing the Florida Election law after the fact, unlike the extension of time during the protest phase, which did change the Florida Election law.

So what if the Supremes say that the extension of time for the recount during the contest was a change in the law? Gore could still get the manual recount during the protest phase.

Gore's real problem is that he probably can't get this done by December 11, and the Florida legislature will appoint a panel of Electors.

I am wondering whether his real end-game is to have the US House pick President Bush, and then have the Senate pick Vice President Gore?
