I have never owned a gun, nor shot anything outside a carnival arcade or a B-B gun target in the woods. I do not belong to the NRA. However, I agree with the idea that self- defense is an inalienable right. In saying that, I take no position on what constitute reasonable expectations to fulfill in exercising that right (we have a right to vote, but must register, for example), except to say that impediments cannot be overburdensome. Now, the right to defend oneself is personal, that is, one need only have enough to defend oneself, ones property, and ones family. A nuclear weapon goes beyond any reasonable firepower for that purpose. In addition, the constitutional right to bear arms contemplates carryable weaponry, and not cannonade.
