BTW: when you used that "wireless" AT&T "InFlight" Air Radio Telecommunication Unit, did you think that the retractable cord was to prevent you from stealing the ARTU?

No. I thought it was to use on my neck in an act of suicide.

BTW2: Did the ARTU have a magnetic stripe slot reader

Yes, it did. But if the instructions provided through the handset were accurate, the software required that I use the dial pad on the phone instead of the magnetic reader.

BTW3: If digital did the ARTU have an RJ-11 jack for your laptop, and if so did you attempt to send an e-mail

I don't know if it had a jack. Regardless, I wouldn't have attempted e-mail. I had a better chance of getting in touch with my brother in time by using voice rather than e-mail.

BTW4: Next time you fly, you may want to pick a carrier that uses Verizon's (formerly GTE's) competetive Airfone "wireless" service with Teledyne technology.

The next time I fly I'll be sure not to use a phone that isn't in the airport, mounted on a wall, and with the handset connected to the base. What a novel idea -- a phone that consistently works.
