PC Club, a 24-store chain in California has all P4 systems on indefinite hold with no release date. That's the word I got from a local outlet.
"Do you have any of those Pentium 4 systems you advertised?"
"No, they are on hold. We don't know when they will be available again."
"So you never got any of the P4 systems?"
"Not here, but I understand they sold a few in Chula Vista and Carlsbad."

At Best Buy, there were neither P4's nor 1.2 GHz Athlons on display. One sales attendant said they had to be special ordered using the kiosk. Another attendant said the P4's were temporarily not available because of a chip problem, but the other one wasn't sure and suggested I try the kiosk anyway.

I got up to the point of entering my credit card info with no indication that P4 systems were unavailable. Didn't try the 1.2 GHz DDR Athlon but saw it listed in the premium price range. BTW, the HP P4 systems sold by Best Buy use PC600 memory, have a 20G HD, no CDRW and a crappy TNT2 graphics board for $2000. YECH!

Gopher,

When Mike Magee was around, we always got the actual prices. The Register is going downhill without Mike.
