Possibly...but where do they put those costs for our Military to bail them out?

Complex question.....In the case of Desert Storm, IMO, we made big bucks on that expense. An unprovable observation is that after Desert Storm OPEC was very cooperative in moving down the price of oil. I've believed for some time that it was a form of "thanks". While the military expenditures were quite high, I think we made a bundle, nationally, through lowered oil prices. It doesn't show up in the accounting books, but none the less I think it is real.

More complex answer. One of the less desirable aspects of the US is the higher violent crime rates in the US versus Europe and Japan. TV, video games, guns at one point or the other get the blame. I believe it is much more complex than that. If I claim that the people of Somolia, for example, are not in our national interests then we create a very subtle message that as long as the violence doesn't happen to me or my family it is not in my interest. When we passively tolerate violence because it is not in our interest then there is a very subtle line that gets crossed. We can commit violence if it is in our interest to do so.

With this personal belief, I suggest that our efforts to assist others is rewarded through reduced violence in our own society. Something that is more valuable than the dollars expended. Unmeasureable and likely unprovable.

But appealing to a religious side. I am not aware of any religion that suggests we only aid those when it is in our own interest to do so. And while there is properly a separation of Church and State, the Government is an extension of ourselves and our moral values.

Besides, Europe should not be counted as "United"...heaven only knows, they are individual countries...

I was referring to Europe collectively for brevity. On an individual basis most of the countries in Europe contributes a larger portion of both their budgets and GDP than the US does.

Closing with a quote from a British politician
[My apologies to the gentleman for not recalling his name at 1:36AM]

Every complex problem has a simple solution....and it's wrong.

I'm going to bed and not even spell checking, goodnight
