I appreciate your position, but it seems to be based more on feelings than on facts. If partisanship was taken out of this it is my belief that more people would support GWB's stance in this matter. That is not to say that people who support Gore will start believing in Bush, but it is bothersome (to me) that GWB is spoken about so negatively regarding his position regarding the recounts and contests of the election. Their (GWB's) position is based in law, with fairness to both parties, but his name is constantly dragged through the mud. If someone says that they support Gore's position because they voted for him and support his effort to win at any cost, at least they are being honest. If they say he is playing dirty tricks or making this process a sham, then they should state reasons why, and be able to back them up. As you say, "Can't we all as Americans agree to that?" The two conflicting statutes you mention regarded whether the Secretary of State MUST certify the election by a certain date (11-14) or MAY certify by a certain date (11-14). The provision that says she MAY certify it mandated that she give the matter reasoned consideration (or legal words that say that). A lower court ruled that she had met this requirement. The FLSC forbid her to certify even though they were not asked to do so, and they also re-set the date the certification must be done by (which changed the rules set BEFORE the election). This is what the USSC is looking at btw. The manual hand recount was legal all along, but the FLSC gave Gore 12 extra days to get the job done (the law called for 7 days after the election). They also said that it was up to the local canvassing boards to decide what standard they would use to count the votes. This was a BIG victory (at the time) for Gore. After Gore got this victory there still were not enough votes for him to win the election, so they sued the Palm Beach canvassing board for not using liberal enough guidelines to count the vote (even though the FLSC's guidelines were met). They lost this suit in court, by the way. Another of their angles was to force Miami-Dade to complete their hand re-count, but the board voted not to because they did not have the time to complete it, and the law called for a COMPLETE handcount. They went to court to FORCE M-D to do the recount, and their request was rejected. They then went to the FLSC, where again it was rejected. The big point they are making now is that ALL VOTES must be counted. But their solution is to count just the votes that show no vote for president in both Palm Beach and Miami-Dade. That is NOT counting all of the votes. It is counting a select group of ballots that in all liklyhood have more scratches and dimples at or near Gore's chad than GWB's. It is an insult to all republicans, and many open minded democrats to portray this as the FAIR way to win an election. Again (this is open to everyone) I would like to debate this from a standpoint of fairness and show that GWB is NOT making a sham out of this. Through an open honest debate on the issues people can make informed postions. With all the trash talking and insults we all just swirl deeper into this mess. Last of all, I am an open minded person. I love to give and love to hear a great argument. If anyone can show me why my position is wrong, I can change it (my opinion). Nobody has countered any of the significant points that I have made, yet plenty have insulted me, and the position I support.
