Yes, "never surrender" is a mantra to rally the troops. Or at least to rally myself, despite the obvious which you overview (as always) so well. Yes our DNA is not programmed to flee. Cowardice has always been ill defined. If I had been incessantly taught as a youth that killing large numbers of innocent people, while sacrificing my own life, would guarantee me eternal paradise at the side of the Just Cause, then I would probably seek the opportunity to do so. Calley's was a different case of a junior commander breaking under the strain of never knowing who was trying to kill he and his men, amplified by "no controlling legal authority." As for air attack, thanks to tech we can/are evolving away from indiscriminate scattered shrapnel vengeance. I honeymooned at a Marine firebase which became a symbol of resistance, not attack. In that time I saw close air support and supply delivery where brave men died, with no civilians as targets. From higher up the B-52 raids made it incomprehensible to us how the enemy could survive. But he did. Will G*? Under our common shares? Always nice to read your posts, Mq.
