Operation Truck Stop 2000 is still a go - pedal to the metal unless Gore gets smart and quits. If not - then it's pedals OFF the metal starting Dec 18th. As the word and the flyers are being spread some of you drivers out there may need a little more motivation. You'd figure knowing what may happen on December 18th, what all you truckers did to congress in November and back in Utah in September, Clinton and Gore would wise up and lay off the trucker's wallets for now, right? Wrong. Get this: Lame duck presidents are known for signing a flurry of last-minute regulations and President Clinton is no exception. The Mercatus Institute, a research organization at George Mason University, estimates that the Clinton administration is on course to fill 29,000 pages of last minute regulations. According to the Los Angeles Times, some of the more controversial regulations include a 95 per cent reduction in the amount of sulfur in diesel fuel, tighter privacy standards for electronic medical records, the designation of the Alaskan Wildlife Range as a national monument, and the blacklisting from federal contracts of companies accused of violating federal labor, environmental and health laws. A 95% reduction in sulfur will increase diesel prices at least 33% higher. Might explain in part that coming recession you've been hearing about. Just what you needed to hear around Christmas time. These regulations will take effect without congressional approval. Our Suggestion: Start Saving Fuel NOW: Obey all the speed limits, full out those log books just like the D.O.T. wants. Hey…'Tis the season. Those merchants won't mind. Here's more: In the Land Lines Magazine's November 2000 edition, it discusses the trucking industry's shut-down as to not manufacturing 18-wheelers, motors, parts, and even the shipping of supplies and raw materials to the manufacture of the big rigs! Also, the lay-offs and the not taking back of trucks that have payments on them could make things worse. The lots are full and trucks are being turned-back. From your brothers in the Great White North: Independent owner-operators across Ontario, Canada, fed up with high diesel fuel prices, have renewed their threats to block major city roadways. On Nov. 26, about 250 angry truckdrivers met with politicians, and after not making much progress, hinted that a protest announcement could be made at any time. Bill Wellman, president of the National Truckers Association, expressed concern to news reporters after the meeting. "They all made their campaign pitches and everyone said we need tax cuts, but there's no help from the feds coming," he told the Toronto Sun. "They all say it's a world problem." Wellman said shippers and trucking companies are not living up to an Oct. 20 agreement to pay an 8.9 percent fuel surcharge based on the gross contract price carriers get for shipping goods for Canadian manufacturers. According to the newspaper, Wellman said some manufacturers are paying the surcharge, but many aren't. He added that the amount of money actually winding up in truckers' pockets has been minimal. "What happened in Europe, will happen here," Wellman told the Sun, referring to blockades that crippled commerce in Britain and France last summer. Groups of truckers and farmers succeeded in getting governments to offer fuel tax cuts and other concessions. - Source Land Line Magazine We need help saving our Constitution and a Nation.
