You can't micromanage as much. That might actually be a blessing, but initially it caused some frustration (not being able to manually allocate workers to specific squares, that is).

The diplomacy and trade managers are incredibly improved. The interface is less annoying (no more trying to click on an event icon but missing and accidentally sending all your capital's defense units on a merry trip across half the planet).

The game is a lot less resource intensive than the first CTP. It's almost unplayable on my K6-2-500, but the sequel runs fine on the same system.

Original CTP is probably easy to bench. The difference between a K6-2-500 and a Duron-800 is immensely noticable. Apparently, it has a lot of weakly optimized AI in there.

I was actually thinking about using CTP to benchmark systems, basically by getting a saved game with tons of existing cities, and timing how long it takes to go from the end of one turn to the beginning of the next. With this info, I would laugh at people who say that 200MHz systems are all you need for 2D stuff. :P

Incidentally, CTP2 is supposedly much more user configurable than its parent. I have been told, for instance, that you can modify a little text file somewhere and enable up to 32 concurrent civilizations in one game.

The game is growing on me. Unfortunately, it doesnot yet have a hotseat patch. However, if I can get my recently broken KT7 system back online, I will be able to play on one monitor using a very convoluted combination of CTP2's IP multiplayer mode, the GeForce 2 MX's video out, and my Marvel G200's TV tuner. <g>

BTW, CTP2 has civilization borders. That and the fact that your city coverage area expands with its population makes for a much more interesting game, imho.
