Joe,

I think FL legislature and executive branch should do just that

That would be very convincing having Bush's brother and the Republican controlled legislature appoint the popular vote loser to be President. You might want to step back and think about the implications.

The only fair way out of this is to split the electoral votes evenly between the two candidates in FL.

Re: "If FL SC is overruled, it will give me as much satisfaction as Bush inauguration. I think the courts are constantly overstepping their proper role. Even if US SC doesn't do it, I think FL legislature and executive branch should do just that. Vote to approve the original certification. Ideally, this should happen after Gore contest fails, so that it is not seen as a political act in the presidential election, but just an act of the 2 branches of government keeping the 3rd one in check"

I agree completely. In fact, in this situation the U.S. House of Representatives has the ultimate authority. They can vote to seat or reject whichever Electors they want. The SC has no say in the matter if the House "just does it", and I believe the House can just tell the Court to butt out.

Joe, (and Elmers response)

Bush is going to win, but that's not the point.

If you guys SERIOUSLY believe that state legislatures should start the practice of circumventing the peoples popular vote, then you are not Republicans or conservatives. You are so damned involved in this partisan situation, that you are not thinking about the source of your beliefs.

Think. You may trust the Florida legislature because it is Republican, but the next legislature in the next election may not be on your side. This is one election, but the issues that are "resolved" will live forever in our republic. Don't give up your conservative principles to win one lousy election.

I WANT Bush to win, I WANT Gore to concede. But I DON'T want the piss ant Florida legislature to override the Florida popular vote. If you do, you are farther left than Gore ever was, and you are making a bigger democratic sacrifice than you understand.
