Since oil hit an inflation-adjusted peak of $80 back in the 1970s, and the price was only broken then by over-production , I think it's likely there could be a considerable lag before the prairie states are covered with giant windmills or giant retorts were set up to distil oil shale. Of course if intelligence were ruling the United States we would have a project comparable to the Manhattan Project seeking alternate energy sources right now. Also, nuclear power needs to be revived.
