Re: "Percentage of students reading and doing math at or above grade level is in single digits - in some cases, a fraction of a percent."

Like I said, it's going to be a long, difficult, expensive fight. Might take several generations to start making significant progress. Doing nothing, however, is not an option.

You are absolutely right on. Flapjack lives in a romantic labor unionist era gone by, he admits it. We've got some real problems with real opportunities to solve them. If we reject the old Flapjack static arguments and try to figure out why these problems persist, and how to solve them, as if it were a business problem with profit/loss considerations, I bet we could fix them. No offense to Flapjack.

You bring up a good point, Michael M:

"All work is good. Yours and mine. You don't have to get your hands dirty to hold your head high. Even the friggin' lawyers (sorry, some of you guys) work their balls off from time to time."

One aspect of the democratic party that bugs me is the attitude that successful people are lucky or lazy or spoiled or whatever. The overwhelming number of really successful people are smart as hell, work there asses off, and should be admired.

The dems make them out to be bad people that should not be trusted. Except the Hollywood types, who they put up on pedestals.
