Fairchild Adds Six-Inch Production Line to Fab Fairchild Semiconductor has added a new fourth line (D-line) to its wafer fab facility in Puchon, Korea. It features Class 1 cleanroom capabilities. With an initial investment of US$80 million, the new 6-inch line will produce 17,000 ten-layer wafers per month during its first year of operation. Wafer starts are expected to increase to 40,000 per month in 2001, and 70,000 in 2002. The new D-line features planar DMOS technology, including 30V logic up to high-voltage logic, as well as standard bipolar BCDMOS and BiCMOS technologies. It will produce power devices such as MOSFET and IGBT discrete products, standard ICs and motor analog ICs, etc. Around 70% of the products will be exported, mainly to China, Taiwan, Singapore, Germany and the US. The Puchon plant was acquired by Fairchild in April 1999 as part of the deal with Samsung Electronics. Since then, it has produced over 10 million products mainly for power control and power protection applications. Apart from the new 6-inch line, the fab also has 4-inch and 5-inch lines.
