The two churches, protestant and hybrid catholic, facing off in the square. The irony is that according to christian mythology, jesus, the lamb of god, is the ultimate sacrifice, liberating us from material sacrifices, and yet they sacrifice to him.

The flavor of corn liqour in the smoky corn mush I drank as I watched the lowering of the the baskets of apples from the buses. I laughed with the Quiche girls as they tried to show me the poor gringa how to make tortillas in a food stall in the market place. Blonde Alice crawled around on the dirt floor with her her three year old counterpart, playing with rock "doggies" that drank from bottle caps. as they played and communicated in the international language of children's love.

And the stone on the hill where the medicine man burns the right color candle, and pours out bottles of whiskey, and breaks eggs, and paper dolls, as offerings for what ails you. An illness, a spurning lover, prosperity for a new matrimony, a male child.

The way they march around the market carrying the saints on platforms decorated with plastics flowers, and small notes, stopping to fire a "cannon" at intervals and playing clay flutes.

ChiChi is wonderful, especially before the buses from the capital get there.
