While the butterfly ballot is not the exact same issue as the absentee ballot - here is what the Kangaroos partially said:

A vital consideration guiding the courts in determining whether an election should be voided is a reluctance to reach a decision which result in disenfranchisement of the voters. Indeed as regards defects in ballots, the courst have generally declined to void an election unless such defects clearly operate to prevent that free, fair and open choice. In the present case, even accepting appellants allegations, we conclude. . . does not constitute substantial noncompliance with the statuatory requirement mandating the voiding of an election.

This is the same legal concept that applies to the absentee ballot cases. The courts will not void an election - or a large block of votes - because of an insubstantial technical deficiency in simply the application process.
