I am no lawyer but my reading of the complaints in both the Seminole/Martin county cases is that illegal, fraudulent, activity took place. If the courts so decide (after all appeals etc) and rule that the suspect ballots are to be thrown out I will have to accept this, because we are a nation of laws and have to abide by our court decisions. If the courts rule that this is a technical violation not worthy of action, I will of course be happy.

However, let us suppose that because the courts threw out some/all of the absentee ballots ( thus leading to a Gore win) the Florida legislature decides to go ahead nonetheless and name its own slate of (Bush) electors. This would be tantamount to them saying that their political needs are above the law. I cannot see myself accepting this double standard. Surely there would be outrage -- particularly if the matter then went to Congress and they accepted the Legislature's Electors along strictly partisan lines.

As I said, very scary. And, I must admit, very ironic.
