Since the machines have been proven fallible (they rarely make the same count twice from what has been reported), why not at least hand count the outsorted ballots and do battle over what is a vote and what isn't? > That pretty much sums up this entire case in a nutshell. However, I am not convinced a manual hand recount will be proven more accurate than a machine count. In other words, multiple manual hand counts will not necessarily produce the exact count twice either, and especially, if the manual recounts should involve interpreting voter intent of dimpled chads. But I will say this. There is validity to the Gore camp's claim that he received less votes from the punch card ballot voting machines more prevalent in counties likely to vote for the Vice President. The difficult question arises on how to remedy the situation with impartiality and fairness within the statues of Florida law. If the courts in Florida should let the Gore camp continue the manual recounts in selective, heavily Democratic counties favoring Gore then it's pretty obvious this solution will produce a statistical bias favoring the Vice President (this is truly stealing the election with intent and malice, in my humble opinion). This remedy is no better than accepting the current machine recounts favoring George Bush. And let's be honest, if the Florida court decides to let the manual recounts proceed in selected Gore counties without a statewide manual recounts of all counties on the technical merit of law then why not just let the original machine count stand? After all, there were probably more legal votes casted for George Bush in the state of Florida without any hanky panky business. Two machine recounts have proven that. Finally, there is the nagging definition of what constitutes a legal vote in the state of Florida? Let me know when this mess is over in 2004. Regards,
