Hi Frank,

Re: He also states the the traditional phone network continues to be more
reliable than the Internet, which in my experience is an artifact
of how the statistics are collected. If I called United Airlines'
reservation number this year, I would think the telephone network
reliability was pretty bad too. Instead the telephone network doesn't
include end-to-end reachability in its reliability. But Internet measures
such as Keynote do include end-to-end reachability.

Would you say that as an Internet consultant his views are somewhat skewed? Or, is he right on? BTW, if American Airlines has problems staffing, configuring and administering their call centers, is it necessarily a reflection on the PSTN that a caller is having problems getting an attendant? Or have we entered a realm now that is characterized as peaches and kumquats?

I think the NANOG poster needs to take a walk around the block. He's been tweaking that router way too long to have a grip any more. He reminds me of the Navy WAC who was so involved in assembly language in the 50's she lost the ability to balance her check book.

You got it about right. What a ridiculous narrow-gauge view of reality.

Best, Ray

Frank- I thought the story was valid. That doubling every three or four months is still being tossed about EVERYWHERE. Just read it yesterday in a NT thread posting, "Unfortunately, all that bandwidth is not good enough. Internet traffic is doubling every 100 days." (http://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=14930140). Not a day goes by where I don't see that quoted, yet few have tried to prove it. Mainly I see CEO's of the equipment players tossing that figure out. Somewhat biased I would say.

What I took away from the article was even the most pessimistic view showed traffic was doubling every year. Is there any reason to believe that may not hold up? -MikeM(From Florida)
