It is certain that the ballots will be preserved and eventually counted by objective scientific means and it is highly probable that this count will show Gore with the most votes. If the GOP uses its control of Florida to force a Bush victory which is later proven to be flawed, then we will have provided the ammunition for sweeping Democratic victories in 2002 and 2004 led by Mrs. Clinton. Frankly, this is exactly what the Democrats are hoping and planning for, most of them WANT us to force Bush into office. And having established that the controlling party can thwart the voters' will, it will be darned difficult to dislodge the Democrats again anytime soon. We will have sacrificed the long term hopes of good men like McCain and Keyes for a brief 4 years of Bush. The GOP was very strong under Reagan and broke the hold of the Democrats, only to shoot ourselves in the foot with Newt and shift momentum to Clinton. Now we are once again aiming the gun straight at the GOP future. For the good of the GOP, Bush must allow an accurate count of the votes and accept the result. We may win the battle over the vote counting, but will lose the war if we force Bush into office and are latter found to have lost the count. (And please don't suggest destroying the ballots, that would simply confirm the assumption that we lost) Bush should immediately request an accurate, scientific recount and announce his intention to abide by the result. Count the whole state if that is better for us, but count we must. As for Jeb staying out of the fray, IT IS HIS JOB TO INSURE THAT FLORIDA IS ACCURATELY COUNTED. Delegating that authority to a partisan Secretary of State does not excuse him from responsibility.
