Re: Palomino prototype reported to be running at 1.5GHz with a simple passive heatsink.
This is just about as funny (and ridiculous) as Paul's claim that the 1 Ghz PIII required no fan

Let's not be too hasty, now. A 1.5GHZ Athlon with no fan would make a fine flashbulb.

Is that what they meant?

:-)

Mani,

Don't be too quick in your judgement about Palomino and the heat sink. Athlon has not been through any power reduction until now, and there may be other packaging factors to consider as well.

Mani,

This is just about as funny (and ridiculous) as Paul's claim that the 1 Ghz PIII required no fan :)

It's amazing, isn't it? It seems that tech authors should at least have to pass some sort of basic test in common sense. Even if isotopically pure silicon helps relieve hot spots on a die, the average power must be dissipated to the surrounding environment through the heat sink -- using conventional cooling techniques, and has nothing to do with the particular heat conduction properties of the silicon used in the die.

Pravin.

More "Palomino is really cool" Teasers From The Register:

One of our regular AMD informants emails to confirm that the
forthcoming Athlon Palomino is indeed exceptionally cool.
"You can put a finger on it while its running," he states.

Regrettably we are not told if this is one of our mole's
fingers, or one belonging to someone he doesn't like very
much.

As someone whose promising rock'n'roll career was brought to
an untimely end by a bizarre accident with a finger and an
early Pentium III prototype in an Intel lab, such cool
running can only be applauded. ®
