TP,
If Strom dies and it could very well happen; SC now has a Democratic governor so more majority.

TigerPaw: I do not know the answer to your question, but it is a good one. There are major intra-organizational issues that must be determined by the 50-50 Senate. The Repubs will argue they have full control of the Senate by virtue of Cheney's tie-breaking vote and are only willing to give the Dems nominal concessions. The Dems say that Cheney is a non-factor in determining who will head committees, etc., since he cannot vote on procedural matters because he is not a senator. If I were Daschle, I would not settle for anything less than chairmanships of half the committees. It could be a long fight in the Senate before senators actually get down to business, given the fact that Lott is a hard-headed partisan.

While perusing some online newspapers today, I read a story on Strom Thurman. He is starting to slip pretty badly, both physically and mentally, the story said. In a phone interview last week, he said he would step down from the Senate fairly soon and turn over the seat to his most recent ex-wife, but Strom's aides in the background later clarified that Strom was confused and that what he said wasn't true. I think Strom may resign sooner than later. At some point he will become an embarrassment to himself and to the country, a fact that some people said first occurred 60 years ago in his segregationist/Dixiecrat days.
