"Nokia Aims to be No. 1 in CDMA Market"...
Is this a threat to QUALCOMM's Gorillahood?

No.... It just indicates that Nokia has finally accepted it's submissive role to Qualcomm as a chimp who is producing the Gorilla's product.

Re: PMCS - PMC-Sierra Inc. - Exceptional Article - a King?

I am still hoping that someone will step forward to do a Project Hunt Report on this fabless communications chip manufacturer.

With greater than twice the market share of their next nearest competitor (Lucent) PMC-Sierra is most certainly the King of ATM chip vendors.

Last year this company had $262.5 million in profitable sales and $156 million was ATM chips.

PMC-Sierra’s sales have been rising more than 30% each quarter.

Despite being pummeled after CSCO announced earnings and discussed inventory build up, PMC is up 58.4% this year, and up 705% since the beginning of 1999.

PMCS has a Market Cap (today) of $18.75 Billion.

22 analysts cover this stock and 15 rate it a "Strong Buy".

I listened to their last to CC's after earnings. They were very positive.

This article is about their 43 year old CEO, but it has excellent background on the company and would be a good starting point for a Project Hunt Report.

How "Electronic Business" selects the CEO of the Year:

>> Electronic Business bestows this honor on CEOs who have not only done an exemplary job of running their companies, but who have also shown leadership in their industry. They also must exhibit the highest degree of integrity and ethics. Editors used the following criteria in evaluating potential candidates:

* Financial performance of the company;

* Ability to motivate employees;

* Skill at building partnerships with suppliers and customers;

* Acumen in mergers and/or acquisitions;

* Reputation for honesty and integrity;

* Ability to address a major strategic challenge successfully;

* Ability to capitalize on long-term technology trends ahead of the market.

PMCS is one of 2 stocks I hold that is not a consensus Gorilla or King. It is 6% of my portfolio. JNPR is the other (3.7%).

EchoStar Files Suit Against Gemstar
LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) -- EchoStar Communications Corp. announced Tuesday it has filed a lawsuit against Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. [NasdaqNM:GMST - news] and its Colorado subsidiaries, charging that they violated various antitrust laws and laws governing competition.

In the suit, the Littleton-based satellite television company detailed Gemstar's alleged illegal and monopolistic licensing practices in its interactive, on-screen programming guides. Gemstar also publishes TV Guide magazine.

Also on Tuesday EchoStar contested Gemstar's allegations of patent infringement in a suit filed by Gemstar in federal court in North Carolina. In addition, the company filed counterclaims attacking the validity and enforceability of the Gemstar patent.

EchoStar is seeking monetary damages and injunctive relief to stop Gemstar's allegedly improper activities.

I don't see how. The better Nokia does in CDMA, the better Q! does. Every success Nokia has in CDMA sends money to Q! for ASICs, royalties then all the software and whatever else they come up with.

Nokia will continue to delay W-CDMA as much as they can because every day that GSM networks use the GSM air interface is another half million handsets they sell, almost. Nokia is making vast profits every day from GSM. Nokia needs CDMA to develop as slowly as they can make it to maximize their GSM sales. But at the same time they have to be selling CDMA flat out in markets which have already gone CDMA. They need to have W-CDMA ready the day somebody turns on a network, but they will be sharing the W-CDMA subscriber market with a LOT more competitors than they do with GSM and starting from a smaller market share. Not good.

It must be a highly politically-charged atmosphere in the 6 Musketeer meetings, with conflicting agendas.
