Last year with the Nasdaq up close to 100%, QCOM was up 2800%. I don't need QCOM to go up another 2800% to make money nor is anyone suggesting that will happen any time soon. However, QCOM has one of the few business models that provides such a high level of visibility for growth in the next 3 to 5 years. Currently, their customer base is 71 million. QCOM's ASIC shipments is expected to grow from 60 million this year to 90 or 100 million next year. This number may prove conservative as UMTS systems are introduced around the world, GSM & TDMA networks are upgraded to 3G, and emerging markets like China and India provide open market competition. What incentive do they have to block CDMA any longer. They know their networks will be upgraded to 3G CDMA in a year or two anyways. I don't see how the the problems in the pc sector have anything to do with the trends in CDMA digital communications and mobile network computing. Dell has failed to offer any meaningful advance in technology or communications in the past five years. They are not a technology company by any traditional measure. They are a commodity box maker that is struggling to compete with other non innovative box makers for a slice of the market. QCOM is a technology powerhouse that has delivered the most radical breakthroughs in the convergence of voice and network computing solutions. Just imagine what it will be like to be able to deliver video conferencing on your cell phone. Have you seen the Nortel commercial with the real time video conferencing? What about gps based safety and mapping solutions. I think the pc companies are back in their rightful place with single digit multiples that commodity stocks deserve. This places a higher premium for the select few companies that have a real growth strategy. QCOM, INTC, TXN, EMC, BRCM, ORCL, SUNW, SNE would be about the only companies in the high tech space that I would seriously consider. These are companies with the technology solutions that will dominate the consumer market for technology.
