You do have a point about the lifestyle thing. 25 yo's have more then their parents do at retirement which could create a huge problem if the economy turns south for any period of time. Lot of borrowed money out there on things like SUV's that you won't be able to give away in a bad economy IMO.

With MOT warning the market looks like it is going to suck. I guess we will just have to scream at each other about the election for another day:)

The marginal tax rates on high incomes may have been higher in the 1950's, I don't know but will take your word for it. But the tax rates on median incomes were lower. The middle-class tax payer is suffering from bracket creep. The number of middle-class taxpayers subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax, which was supposed to apply to the wealthy, increases every year. The tax code needs an overhaul.

I agree that married couples who want to have the wife stay at home and take care of the kids need to scale down their expectations. Still, here in the D.C. metro area, where the real minimum wage is substantially higher than the federal mandate, can you imagine someone like a garbage truck driver or a cashier at Giant supporting a family of four and paying a mortgage, even for a modest house?
