You are correct...but that home and the lifestyle you talk about is HIGHER than it was in the '50s. The Ward Cleaver home was typically ABOVE the average for the era.

One would have to look at average tax% which would adjust for the inflation effects of 40+ years to determine the FED tax bite. FICA is probably an order of magnitude higher than it was in the late 50s. In fact, many 2 worker families pay more in FICA than FED income tax, assuming they have the normal amount of deductions and exemptions...and I'm not even counting the FICA portion that their employers paid, which theoretically are lost wages that could be passed through if no FICA existed.
