The "spiriting" away of Jesus body was just the first attempt in removing the helenistic influences that were becoming dominant in Jerusalem. It didn't work. If it were not for Paul (Saul) picking up the pieces of the legend and story it would have all been forgotten. Paul was able to combine the rumours of the event with the hysteria of the pending Jewish revolt to make a memorable story.

Do People's Temple, Branch Davidian and Heavens Gate sound familiar? Dying for your cause doesn't make it true and a lot of people die for causes that aren't true. Especially if they believe a "greater good" will come from it.
