At least AMD is starting the price war this time...

... or some palominos are coming up

Still can't find any 266MHz FSB parts.

Andreas,

<1.2 GHz Athlon for $289 on Pricewatch now!! That's unbelievable. Either demand is really bad or AMD is intentionally flooding the market with high-speed parts. With this pricecut a 1.2 GHz Athlon is cheaper than a Pentium III with 933 Mhz. I guess we will see 1 GHz in the $1,000 OEM systems very soon. I really hope that this move won't destroy ASPs. At least AMD is starting the price war this time...>

Looks to me AMD is solving the infrastructure problem with a brute force approach. The key to maintaining ASPs with this kind of price structure is to ensure that the FSB133 infrastructure ramps quickly and 1.33 and higher speeds take hold fast.
May not be a bad risk given where AMD stands today with FSB133 infrastructure and the anticipated Palomino release.

Chuck

Andreas, here's a table showing today's prices compared to 12/5 (two days ago!)
(12/5 prices from tech-review.com

12/5 12/7
Thunderbird 900 $168 $148
Thunderbird 950 $220 $169
Thunderbird 1000 $253 $198
Thunderbird 1100 $333 $241
Thunderbird 1200 $483 $289

Prices for 850 & below mostly holding steady.
The 1.2ghz cut is the most remarkable, as the parts were all
backordered a couple days ago. Strange, and maybe a little
scary. Vacination can be painful, I guess.

Cheers, Dan.

Re: 1.2 GHz Athlon for $289 on Pricewatch now!!

With 1GHZ not much more than a $100 (cost to OEMS after all discounts and allowances) part next month, these prices are inevitable. The only way for AMD to get into the corporate space is if 1GHZ is perceived as a minimum speed, and Intel can't supply enough 1GHZ parts.

Given that strategy, 1.1GHZ and 1.2GHZ are only a little faster than entry level (corporate) and can't be priced too much higher.

Notice that the price of 933MHZ P3 is actually rising, despite the much heralded surplus of CPUs. Intel cannot supply the market for parts over 866MHZ - AMD's goal is turn that fact into its entry into the corporate market.

Regards,

Dan

Refer your post #21449...all "milestones" for 2000 already reached(one month early)...2001: year of mass production, speed and innovation...
Looks like AMD wants buyers in the 1 to 1.2 gig segment.Given the surge in demand likely to fall out of these price cuts, AMD must be fairly confident about its capacity to produce in this range!!!

Maybe they are getting rid of inventory in anticipation of a switch to Palomino on the 12th.
