Bruce,

What [does Siebel] use as the distribution mechanism for upgrades and maintenance? What will they be using in the future as we complete the transition from client/server to network application? If they don't maintain the future network for this, who will they outsource it to....?

Without answering any of those questions, those are terrific questions that we should be asking about how network effects applies to Siebel. When I referred to a network as a "core operation", I was thinking of a network in which the network itself provides revenue streams to the operator, as opposed to product sold and distributed within the network.

Interestingly, Siebel actually does operate a network now that it has purchased Sales.com. Sales.com operates a network which could offer streams of revenue in the form of advertising, subscriptions, etc., if Siebel chooses to use the network in that way. However, even if management does that it's not plausible that those revenue streams would significantly impact its financial statements.
