Sempra unit files for emergency natgas price caps
SAN DIEGO, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE - news) unit San Diego Gas and Electric on Thursday filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a cap on natural gas prices at the Californian border, a spokesman said.

In a request for emergency relief from federal regulators, the utility sought a price cap of 150 percent of a national average as reported by Gas Daily or a similar publication.

Natural gas prices at the southern California border have been skyrocketing during the last few days and traded on Thursday at more than $50.00 per million British thermal units, up from less than $6.00 last month.

San Diego Gas & Electric also asked that price caps for short-term releases of capacity for service to the California border and to points of interconnection between interstate pipelines and California local distribution companies, be reimposed effective immediately.

Such caps would remain in place until March 31, 2001, the utility requested.
