Amy, Things that fall off a cliff need to be investigated to see if it's going to continue. But my guess is that it was only some last minute xmas cancellations, which is essentially a one-time event, which isn't as bad as the other option, which is a continuous event. Must have been the former, otherwise, the stock would have dropped.

Actually, Andy Bryant was hesitant to say anything about the dropoff and when anything might recover. He wouldn't say anything about Q1 or next year, begging off until mid Jan. (that would be earnings CC time, wouldn't it). Not canceling any capex orders was a plus, I thought (if they're right in thinking they can continue to sell everything they can make).

I think that, if you want to be in Intel, Kumar's call is the best. Accumulate and wait. P4 and IA64 are of huge importance. I think they'll pull off P4, very high M, no GHz, gets better all the time, market has to have a 32 bit micro, etc. IA64 adoption is the big question mark, to me.

Tony

Re: my guess is that it was only some last minute xmas cancellations

Have you considered the possibility that some OEMs, presented with opportunity to purchase at AMD's recently announced prices, are substituting 1GHZ to 1.2GHZ Athlons for the 800MHZ to 933MHZ P3s they had earlier planned to procure?

Go to pricewatch.com and compare prices at the speed grades I've listed.

If you were a buyer for Compaq, Gateway, HP, or IBM, and were faced with the two component price lists, what would you have done?
