Street: Bush counties are disproportionately served by optical scanning machines which are much more accurate than the Votomatics. The failure to record a vote via scanner, then, is more likely the result of a vote not being cast. Beyond that, counties with a preponderance of African American and poorer voters are more likely to be using the older Votomatics. The thinking is that these counties will more likely produce additional votes for Gore. M2

Good Morning Street,

Your numbers are interesting. I don't feel they will fall that way because of different counties using different voting methods thus a lot of the undercounts are accurate that no one was chosen for President.

you said re undervotes: "Difference is a Bush "lead" of 7,926"

Street, I don't think this number has much meaning, because different counties that are part of that total voted for Bush by different percentages. Nonetheless, a "lead" is a "lead" and if that was your point, I tend to agree. My calculation necessarily treats all precincts within a county the same, and I doubt that's valid. Some precincts might have had more undervotes (proportionately) than others, and the registrations/demographics of those precincts may well favor Gore for all I know.

BTW, I just got up after staying up too late last night, so am in the process of catching up with events.
