hdl, they've got petitions, which aren't called "briefs" but are, in fact, briefs. I am a member of the United States Supreme Court bar - that and a couple of bucks will get me a latte at Starbucks - actually wrote a petition to the United States Supreme Court - denied in record time - I think they mailed the denial before I left the courthouse - but a petition contains extensive legal argument and citations, and a short appendix which includes the order below.

When a petition is granted, then the parties file briefs. The "briefs" are anything but brief, much longer than the petition, but just elaborations on the theme.

Also, the Justices watch CNN, too, you know. -g-
