Dan, <Gore requested recounts in some counties, and in particular counties where it made sense for him to request recounts. >

And you don't think this absolutely violates the spirit of "All votes must be counted"? Only requesting recounts in counties where he knows he can find more votes for himself?

I guess Gore really meant to say "All votes must be counted, except those which might be against me." The only good thing out of the recent Florida Supreme Court ruling is that the recount was ordered in all counties, not just in those Gore wanted. At least the Democratically-appointed judges still had some sense left.

EDIT: I just saw the USSC's action after I posted this. Geez, I agree with John Fowler. I didn't think this situation could have gotten any messier until now.

Dan,

Candidates may request recounts. Gore requested recounts in some counties, and in particular counties where it made sense for him to request recounts. That is his right, even his responsibility as the candidate representing the views of many people.

Bush didn't request any recounts, and it could cost him the election.

What Gore asked for is not a recount, but a new count, based on different rules from the normal count. He asked to count "dimple chads" that were only counted in 1 county and partially in another. That's not a recount.
