Sand OT re My point is that Gore started
the manipulation by asking for a hand count when he knows that the standard

That's what I was doing my best to avoid, "party politics"
& the finger pointing that goes with it.

I was looking at the system , because this never had to
happen to start with, also I know the best solution
would be found in the same way it could have been
avoided to start with.
To nitpick it only lets it come back again
and again and again, we need to have run off elections
and that should have already been in place long ago.
------------

BTW you'r rooting for Bush is obvious and I might add
disingenuous considering how hard I'v tried to leave
out any implication of the way the vote should go,
my ONLY point is that the "popular" vote without a run off
if less than a majority is a screwed up mess to start
with.

But being you did draw me in I will add that your wrong
in thinking Gore started it. Most of us see what we want
to see but one fact I do know is that the count was close
enough in the first place that the recount was a given
and had to happen by Florida Law;
no one had to
start or request it and no one should obstruct it.

The nit picking has been all about how and where it
will be done.
And I contend not just Florida , but every State
where there was not a clear 50%+ for one
or the other ought to re-vote.
-------------
BTW I voted for Nader even though I knew he didn't
have a prayer, he did have some important things to
say and I wanted him to know at least some people
heard what he was saying. However If I had
thought he could have won I wouldn't have voted for him :-)

I live in Texas and I'm not so dumb as to know that
Bush wouldn't sweep this state.

Not that he is so popular here in his own state, but
"pork barrel politics is alive and well,"
By that I mean he didn't and couldn't win as Governor by near the margin in Texas as he did in running for
President.
I think most Texans would like to see him as President
as much as to get him out of the Governors mansion as
anything else.

Never can I recall any President losing his own
State even though history shows some
that couldn't win a States janitors job the second time
if they had to get it by votes in their own State ,
however they never failed to rally behind them if they had a
shot at being President.
it's "pass the pork or don't you dare come back home"
type voting.

Here is my 2 cents worth.
1. The margin of one candidate over the other is smaller than the margin of error in machine counting the votes.
(I voted using a punch card such as they had in Florida, and I had to tear every chad off by hand because the punch did not fully detach them)
2. Hand counts produce smaller margins of error in counting the votes. (The manufacture of the machines that counts the punch card vote has so testified)
3. The standard used to count the votes by hand should not materially affect the relative outcome in any subset of votes if it is applied equally to all cards reviewed in that sample. Check this out with your statistics guru.
4. It is more more fair to recount under-votes state-wide rather than in a few select counties.
5. Disputes of law should be handled in the courts.
6. In any contest: Whoever is ahead wants the contest stopped while they are ahead. Whoever is behind wants to keep playing until time runs out, or until he gets ahead. If you have a lead, you try to slow down the game and run out the clock.
7. People are likely to approve of rulings in favor of their candidate (or team) and disapprove of rulings that go against their candidate (or team).
8. Both Democrats and Republicans believe in the legitimacy of their cause.
9. All or most of the Florida Supreme Court was appointed by Democratic governors. Florida Supreme Court rulings on this case will not directly change the character of the Florida Supreme Court appointments during the next few years (They will be made by Republicans no matter how that court rules).
10. Republicans appointed most of the Supreme Court judges. Supreme Court rulings on this case will directly impact the makeup of the Supreme Court in the next few years.
11. Both the Florida Legislature and the US House of Representatives are controlled by the Republicans. The Florida Governor is GW's brother.
12. Both candidates believe even a tainted win is better than not winning.
13. Half the voters will believe they were screwed.
14. Half of the eligible voters didn't care enough to vote.
15. Whoever becomes the president will have done so with the active support of less than 1/4 of the eligible voters.
16. IMHO, either Bush or Gore will over-stimulate the economy by fulfilling campaign promises. The Fed will drive up interest rates in proportion to the fiscal stimulus applied, almost certainly precipitating a serious recession within two years.

<<My point is that Gore started the manipulation by asking for a hand count when he knows that the standard "Clear discernable intent of the voter" is idiotic and shouldn't be a part of any law. >>

Like it or not that is the law in both Fl and Tx. Bush himself signed such a law.

If the supreme court set a standard for the recount they would have been creating law, and the Republicans would have jumped on that big time.

Blame the legislatures for this idiocy, not Gore.
