Absolutely! I would venture to say that at least half of the people who did vote for him did so very reluctantly.

I actually believe that if either party or a third party was fiscally conservative and socially progressive it would easily command the majority of votes in the country.

That's easy, it's because Bush was able to raise so much more money for his campaign than anyone else. Big business gave him all he wanted because they knew he would be in their pocket.

If McCain had been the nominee of the republican party he would have beaten Gore easily. Gore wouldn't make a great president, but as bad as he would be most people knew by the general election that Bush would be twice as bad. Thus Gore won the popular vote and if the true results are known in time he will have won the electoral vote too.
