Don,

I would think this mess has been good for your party (& Nader's). I would think a lot of people would consider alternatives more seriously after this considering the mud, innuendo, half-truths, lies, fraud, hypocrisy, etc.

Given that you are Libertarian, I'm surprised that you are opposed to eliminating the Electoral College considering that it is a way to keep out 3rd parties and was a product of our forefathers who had never heard of a political party before -- Just GW (the original one). That's why I don't think it will ever go away, either -- the parties in power know that somebody like Perot can get 19% of the vote but no inroads whatsoever. But I have read some mailings from Libertarians, so I suppose that the Electoral College is perhaps thought of as a way to limit or mitigate the centralized powers from corrupting the system.

Still... maybe in 20 or 30 years there will be something historically significant about what happened this year -- a turning point, perhaps. Cultural shifts are never easy, and they are rarely understood at the time (much like stock market bubbles). At some point, for example, our litigious society will have a shift to accountability and there could be a dramatic shift against those who are not accountable. (I don't actually think that will happen in the next 50 years though.) This election shows how unaccountable people are for their own actions.
