Yeah, when the KM133 chipset becomes available in VERY good volumes, which I don't expect until late Q1/early Q2 because we're dealing with VIA, we will find out for sure (by checking prices) if AMD's current excuse for practically giving away Durons was proper. "Maybe some product differentiation between Palomino and Tbird (call it Athlon 2 or something) would enable AMD to increase high-end ASPs. Sub$200 for the biggest and baddest CPU is not a good sign." SOMETHING needs to be done about the absurdly low GHz Athlon prices. To put things in perspective, here is a comparison of current Athlon prices to K6 prices when the K6-2 400 came out on Nov. 16, 1998 Athlon K6-2 $254/1.2GHz $283/400MHz $223/1.1GHz $213/380MHz $179/1GHz $187/366MHz Today 11/16/1998 Amazing, huh?! The speed of the processors doesn't matter, just the pricing of their fastest processors. Back then the K6-2 was ALL AMD had, but now AMD has a high-end processor that is selling for what the K6-2 sold for and the Duron is pushed below this. Yeah, market conditions were completely different back then, but the principle is that AMD is selling a HIGHLY competitive processor at prices the K6-2 sold for. I hope your speculation is right and Palomino will be priced ABOVE the current pricing rather than replacing it. However, I don't think expect AMD to ever fetch $800 for a desktop processor as long as Intel has the speed crown. Of course, all my b**ching about wanting higher prices doesn't amount to much if PC sales continue to say weak. BTW, Here's the headline to an old press release - "ALi AND VIA ANNOUNCE PLANS TO DEVELOP OPTIMIZED CHIPSET SOLUTIONS FOR THE AMD-K7™ PROCESSOR" Click the link and check the date of the release. Try not to laugh TOO hard!www1.amd.com I got today's prices from The Register. 400MHz link - www1.amd.com
