You've given a number of comments on what "my" side should be doing. What do you think the responsibility of "your" side should be? Do the losers have to do anything, or is it entirely the responsibility of the winners to make conciliatory gestures?

The 49.99999% of the voters who voted for both candidates only represent about half of registered voters, and less than half of people who could register but haven't. Both parties, to move ahead, have little chance of wooing the voters already committed to the other party, and must woo those in the middle who didn't vote.

You're right, there was something special about Reagan. But also, when he ran for office, I think that the Republican party opposition to abortion was less entrenched. I agree with McCain, the Republican hard-line on abortion is making it hard to win.

"they brought in ex-Reagan admin relic James Baker"

Can you or someone reading this help me find a link to info about the role of James Baker when he was Sec. of the Treas. during Reagan's administration, specifically during the period of the 1987 market crash?

My recollection is that the crash partly was precipitated by some structural problems with exchange rates with currencies, and that Baker was seen as an amateur in a high place. The info I read once laid much of the blame for the crash on Baker.

Any help appreciated, to flesh out, confirm or repudiate my recollections. After all, maybe better understanding the past can better help bring the country back together.
